Horton Plains in Sri Lanka Holidays

Horton Plains National Park is located an hour away from Nuwara Eliya. These plains, formed by millions of years of erosion, lie right on top of Sri Lanka’s mountains. This is an must visit place if you are in your Sri LankaHolidays. Here large herds of elk, silhouetted against clouds of the lowlands, move among scarlet rhododendrons. World’s End gives you unparalleled views of the flatland to the south, as you teeter on the edge of an 800-metre high precipice.

Buffeted by the wind, the highlands of the Horton Plains NP include some of the island’s most spectacular landscapes, with stretches of grassland and forest, giant ferns, trees clawing the clouds, and peat-rimmed lakes. This strange, wild, almost melancholy landscape was discovered by the tea planter Thomas Farr, who named it after SirRobert Wilmot Horton, governor of the island from 1831 to 1837.

Overlooked by the Kirigalpota Mountains, the second highest range on the island (2395 m), Horton Plains NP forms the western edge of the Haputale range, poised high above the Ruhunu lowlands. Buffeted by the wind and too high (1800-2 160 m) for farming, these vast highland prairies (patna) do not permit any kind of serious crop cultivation and have escaped the intensive exploitation of the center of the island.

This is also one of the top destinations for bird lovers who visit the area to look for several of Sri Lanka’s endemics; these include the Yellow Eared Bulbul, the Ceylon Hill White Eye, Ceylon Whistling Thrush and the Ceylon Blue Magpie. The diversity of vegetation is also impressive from grasses to ferns, shrubs and large flowering trees. The montage forest is very distinctive with all the trees reaching a similar height to protect them against excessive precipitation, the western slopes support the most extensive area of cloud forest in the country. Sri Lanka tours can be organized to travel to Horton Plains.

Annual rainfall is high with the area being affected by both monsoons as well as the inter-monsoonal periods; it is driest between January and March. The temperatures are considered ably cooler than low lying areas. The tea growing area of Nuwara Eliya is a convenient base for visiting the park and Kandy or Yala can be reached within a half day’s scenic drive from here.

Sri Lanka Holidays too Galle by Train

My next trip was to Galle. I decided to ditch the luxury for a while. So the very next day I informed my tour operator that I don’t want any transportation to Galle. They cancelled the cab reserved only for me. I took some maps and guide books from a store nearby and decided to travel by train to Galle. This is another adventure in my Sri LankaHolidays . I was excited from the start.

The very next day I went to Aluthgama railway station early in the morning in order to catch the train to Galle. It was almost 8.05 AM when the train arrived, luckily I bought tickets and I got on to the train. It was already full. I was bit disappointed with the luggage I was carrying with, until a generous local offered me a seat. I decided to shift with him time to time. The train was a semi-express and it stopped in every hall till Ambalangoda. After Ambalangoda it was express and went directly to Galle. It was an tiring journey. For a moment I thought that I should have taken the cab. But it was only until I saw beautiful scenarios along the way in the coastal belt. The train was so close to the sea, I saw many fishing boats and it was like riding with the sea. After 2.30 hours, we reached Galle train station. I got down from the train and went directly to the canteen in the station and had a wonderful Sri Lanka tea. Then I went it the washroom to get myself fresh. There after I came out to catch a tuk tuk to the hotel I booked. Luckily there were few around for me to get and within 5 minutes I was at the hotel. I unpacked my stuff thinking about what to do next in my SriLanka tours in Galle.

Tour to Aluthgama, Sri Lanka

Dividing Beruwala from Bentota, the lively little town of ALUTHGAMA offers a welcome dose of everyday life amidst the big resorts, and remaining refreshingly unaffected by the local package tourist trade. The main street is a colorful succession of trades: a fish market straggles up its west side, with all sorts of seafood lined up on benches supervised by machete-wielding fishmongers, while at the south end of the road, local ladies flog great piles of lurid, factory-made cloth. You will be amazed to see these things in your Sri Lanka Tours .

Aluthgama's other attraction is its good and relatively cheap selection of guest houses; these places aren’t actually c the beach, but just behind it at the edge of the beautiful lagoon at the mouth of the Bentota River  in many ways just as attractive a location as the oceanfront, especially at night, when the lights of the northern Bentota resorts twinkle prettily in the darkness across the waters. A couple of guest houses have their own boats to shuttle you quickly across the lagoon to the beach opposite, depositing you on the spit of land known as Paradise Island otherwise it’s a ten-minute walk, or a quick tuk tuk ride, to the nearest section of beach at Bentota .

J Bawa designed about 10km inland from Aluthgama, the idyllic Brief Gardens (daily 5pm Rs.325 including guided tour) comprise the former house and surrounding estate of the writer and artist Bevis Bawa, J Bawaelder brother of the architect Geoffrey Bawa - the name alludes to Bawa’s father, who purchased the land with the money raised from a successful legal brief Bevis Bawa began landscaping the five-acre gardens in I 92 and continued to work on them almost up until his death in 1992, creating a series of terraces which tumble luxuriantly down the hillside below the house. The gardens are nice for a stroll, but the main attraction is the house, a low-slung orange building stuffed with quirky artworks, some by Bawa himself: several pieces including two enter-taming aluminum sculptures and a big mural of Sri Lankan scenes) are by the Australian mist Donald Friend, who came to Brief for a week’s visit and ended up staying five and a half years. Other exhibits include old colonial furniture and a fascinating collection of photographs of the imposing Bawa himself 4he was six foot seven inches tall), both as a young man serving as a major in the British Army and as one of Sri Lanka’s leading social luminaries, posing with house guests such as Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. The return journey from Aluthgama by tuk tuk, including an hour’s waiting time, should cost Rs.400-500. Avoid visiting at weekends, when the place gets overrun.  It was a remarkable trip in my Sri Lanka Holidays .

Boat Ride in Bentota River

It was an amazing day for another adventure here in My Sri Lanka Holidays . I was ready for another journey to the area called Bentota. Bentota is a coastal area to the south side of Sri Lanka where Benthara River meets the ocean. I took my traveling guide book to see whether there are any good places to visit in this area before moving to Galle. Luckily I found a wonderful bay like place near to Aluthgama area. I contacted my tour operator to get more information about the area and guess what they provided with me all the information I was waiting for. I wanted to go on a boat ride in the Bentota River.  They called me back with good news saying my request will be fulfilled. I was so glad to hear the news and I prepared myself for the trip. When the clock strike 10.00 in the morning my tour operator came with a water guide to the little hotel I was in. “Am I glad to see you” I said, knowing it was going to be another awsome day in holidays to sri lanka

Riding in to The Wild
We drove about a mile to get to the beach where a dock was located in. I was escorted to motor boat over there. We started our journey at about 10.30 AM from Bentota into the far side of the river. It felt amazing to be on this boat. We took some turns around the bend and passed the Bentota main bridge. After a while the guide slowed down the boat. I was puzzled with the whole situation and asked him why. Then he pointed a nearby stone bench in the middle of the river. It was a huge crocodile or an alligator. It was a dread full sight for me. After a while we started moving forward into the river where a huge infestation of almanac mangroves. It was like riding into the Amazon. After about 15 minutes we came out of the jungle back to the river. He stopped again for a moment near another little boat where I got the chance to touch and feel crocodile babies. I must say that it was an amazing experience I had in my Sri Lanka Holidays . We went back to the shore around  1.30pm and I had lunch in the hotel.

Sea Turtle Orphanage

Sri Lanka is a wonderful island filled with joy and treasure. If someone wants to have a unique experience, the best place to visit will be Sri Lanka. There are many places in Sri Lanka which is attractive and interesting. You may find these by a Tour Operators Sri Lanka . They will help you and guide you to these places rather than going alone by yourself.

Today I'm going to talk about the sea turtle orphanage in down south Sri Lanka. it is a marvelous experience for us all to visit those poor animals who are diminishing slowly from the world. These innocent creators are adopted by few locals who believe in their well being. Their project has been taken over by the department of forest to fund and maintain the facility.

Unlike other turtles, sea turtles have got a different way of living. They are very delicate animals who are struggling to survive. Some people are trying to kill /sell and sabotage these animals. Some may even steal their eggs to make money. What we should keep in our mind is that they are also living beings that needs to sustain. The sea turtle orphanage currently has about 322 turtles. Unlike other animal’s sea turtles lay eggs in huge numbers. But after the surviving level only few will remain to the world. Tour Operators Sri Lanka will arrange trips to down south which you will be able to enjoy to the ultimate level of your desire.

Unawatuna Beach Sri Lanka

This is my first post after the new year about my Sri Lanka Holidays . This year I'm going to tell you about another wonderful place in down south. Unawatuna beach is a very popular place among tourists like our selves . The beach is so beautiful that many locals even attracted to this place.

Before going to Unawatuna I would like to remind about another special place in Galle called Hummanaya. This is a very interesting place where a high pressured sea water shoots to the sky from a little whole in a rock in the beach.  This was an amazing opportunity for me to see the true nature in Sri Lanka. A picture os given below

Then we headed back to the most amazing part of our Sri Lanka Holidays where we found serenity on the beach. Me and my family rested on the beach while our kids were playing on the beach it was amazing
